About Cookout & Called Out
Cookout & Called Out is four rounds of Juneteenth cookout joy on one shared screen, with every player on their own phone. Called Out opens the day: each of you stands accused of a cookout misdeed — taking the corner piece of the mac and cheese without asking, yanking the aux cord mid-song, hiding a personal two-litre of red drink under your folding chair — and you get exactly one sentence to talk your way back to the table before the room votes for the smoothest talker.
The Spotlight hands one player the block party spotlight: a cookout moment they act out in silence or draw on their phone while everyone else guesses which of five near-identical moments it was. Reunion Roll Call puts anonymous answers to reunion-table questions on the board — plate-building strategy, honest opinions on raisins in potato salad — and asks the room to name who wrote each one, while the Grill Master quietly slips fakes into the pile. Last Plate Standing closes it out in sudden death: two cookout picks every few seconds, red drink or sweet tea, spades or dominoes, one side clears your plate, until a single player is left holding theirs.
Every round opens with a card explaining how it is played, and it waits until every phone is ready — or until the host starts anyway — so nobody has to have played before and nobody has to explain rules over the music. Two to sixteen players, ten to twenty minutes at the pace the host picks, and the pools of call-outs, spotlight moments, and roll-call questions are deep enough that "Play again" keeps dealing new material all afternoon.
How a room starts
- Pick a game from the catalog — every occasion has its own room.
- Put the game's board screen where everyone can see it: a TV, a laptop, or a shared screen on a video call.
- Players scan the QR code (or type the room code) in their phone's browser. No app, no account.
- Play — everyone answers, votes, and scores from their own phone.
How to play Cookout & Called Out
A short narrated walkthrough of the whole game, from joining on your phone to the final scores: watch the how-to video. It is one tap from inside the room too, so a first-time group never needs the rules explained.
Where Cookout & Called Out fits
You will find it in the Juneteenth room, alongside the other games picked for that occasion.
Common questions
- How many people can play, and how long does it take?
- Two to sixteen players, ten to twenty minutes depending on how many rounds the host runs and the pace they set. It still works at the small end — with fewer than four players the Grill Master writes extra answers so Reunion Roll Call holds up.
- What do we need to play?
- One shared screen everyone can see (a TV or laptop) and a phone per player. Phones join with a room code — nothing to install.
- Is it family-friendly?
- Yes. It is pure cookout comedy — misdeeds like cutting the red velvet cake before auntie said it was time — and everything else is what your own group types in. It plays fine with kids, grandparents, and every cousin in between.
- Can someone who is not at the cookout play?
- Yes, over a video call. Every phase happens on phones plus the shared screen, and in The Spotlight a remote player simply chooses to DRAW their moment instead of acting it out, so the room still sees everything.
- How much writing is there?
- One-sentence stories in Called Out and short answers to reunion-table questions in Reunion Roll Call. The rest of the game is tapping, guessing, and voting.
